Dutch Word of the Day
nacht
NAHKHT
Amsterdam at night — the nacht — is a different city entirely. After midnight, the tourists retreat to their hotels, the trams stop running, and the canals become mirrors. The only sound is water lapping against houseboats and the distant click of a lone cyclist.
The Night Watch — Rembrandt's masterpiece — wasn't actually a night scene. Its original title was "The Militia Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq." Centuries of varnish darkened the painting until viewers assumed it depicted nighttime. When it was cleaned in 1947, the "night" turned out to be day. Rembrandt painted light; time painted nacht.
Amsterdam has a "Nachtburgemeester" — a Night Mayor — one of the first cities in the world to create such a position. The Night Mayor mediates between nightlife venues, residents, and the city government, ensuring Amsterdam's famous nightlife can thrive without destroying the peace of its residential neighbourhoods.
The most atmospheric Amsterdam nacht experience is the light festival (November-January), when artists install illuminated sculptures along the canals. You can walk or boat through tunnels of light reflected in dark water — the city at its most magical.
