Dutch Word of the Day

Modern Dutch culture

The Netherlands punches absurdly above its weight in music. A country of 17 million people produced Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, Afrojack, Hardwell, and essentially invented the global EDM scene. Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), held each October, is the world's largest electronic music conference.

But Dutch muziek culture goes far deeper than DJs. The Concertgebouw, built in 1888 on the Museumplein, is considered one of the three finest concert halls in the world for acoustics. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has been performing there for over 130 years.

The Paradiso — a converted 19th-century church on the Leidseplein — is where these worlds collide. Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and Adele have all played beneath its stained glass windows. The organ pipes still stand behind the stage. On any given night, the bass vibrates through gothic arches that once held hymns.

The Dutch relationship with muziek is democratic: from the Royal Concertgebouw to the Paradiso to the illegal warehouse raves of the 1990s, the principle is the same — great sound, shared space, everyone welcome.
