Dutch Word of the Day
liefde
LEEF-duh
Liefde — love — in Dutch culture is practical, egalitarian, and deeply felt without being loudly declared. The Dutch don't do grand romantic gestures. They split the bill, because equality matters more than chivalry. They cycle side by side, sharing the rain.
The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, on April 1, 2001. Amsterdam's Homomonument, three pink granite triangles on the Keizersgracht, is the world's first memorial to persecuted LGBTQ+ people. Love, in Amsterdam, is a civil right.
Dutch directness extends to relationships. "Doe maar normaal" (just be normal) applies to love too. Flowers on a birthday, not a random Tuesday. An arm around a shoulder on a bridge, not a flash mob proposal. The Dutch word "lief" (sweet, dear) is the most common term of endearment — simple, warm, honest.
Amsterdam's bridges at dusk, when couples pause to watch the light on the water, are perhaps the city's most quietly romantic image. Liefde doesn't need to shout when the setting does the talking.
