The Dutch art of leven — life, or living — is deceptively simple. Cycle to work. Eat a boterham (sandwich) for lunch. Leave the office at 5. Pick up the kids. Sit in the park. Repeat.

The Netherlands consistently ranks in the top 10 happiest countries in the world, and Dutch children are regularly ranked the happiest on earth. This isn't because life is perfect — housing is expensive, the weather is terrible, and the taxes are high. It's because the Dutch decided what matters and built a society around it.

Work-life balance is practically a constitutional right. The Netherlands has the highest rate of part-time work in the developed world — especially among fathers. Leaving work at 5 PM is not lazy; it's expected. Working late is viewed with suspicion ("What are they doing wrong that it takes so long?").

Vondelpark on a summer evening captures Dutch leven perfectly: people reading, picnicking, playing guitar, cycling, sleeping in the grass, grilling, playing football, doing yoga — all at once, all together, all relaxed. Life isn't something that happens after work. Life IS the point.
